San Jose-based Adobe has introduced a program to help users of Quark XPress and other desktop publishing products switch to Adobe PageMaker. The promotion -- "It's Time to Try Adobe PageMaker" -- offers discount pricing for users of competitive products, free technical support, and a free CD-ROM that includes technical information, a Quark XPress document converter and tryout versions of PageMaker 6.5 for Macintosh and Windows. AII, an imagesetter manufacturer based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., has announced it has signed an Adobe PostScript software development and OEM distribution licensing agreement with Adobe Systems of San Jose, Calif. JOURNAL REVIEW (11k, morning): upgrade of IQue editorial system to version 3.0. -- ATLANTA BUSINESS CHRONICLE (37k, weekly): IQue Server with graphics capabilities; 27 copies of NewsEditPro IQue; nine copies of DragX; nine copies of QTools, and one copy of Transporter, Baseview's utility for moving files into and out of the IQue database. Harris, a pre-press systems integrator based in Melbourne, Fla., has announced it will collaborate with Cascade Systems Inc., an archiving systems supplier based in Andover, Mass., to create an interface between Harris' XP-21 production system and Cascade's MediaSphere archiving system. The proposed link will integrate the archiving process with editorial workflow. Harris also reported that the New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE (267k, all day) has ordered a Harris NewsMaker editorial system consisting of 130 NewsMaker software licenses, wire server software and upgrades of 32 Harris 2100 pagination workstations to NewsMaker Pagination. Heidelberg USA, a publishing systems supplier based in Hauppauge, N.Y., and Creo Products of Vancouver, British Columbia, have announced they have entered a partnership to sell and service computer-to-plate technology. IPA Systems Ltd., a software developer and systems integrator based in Cheltenham, England, has announced the availability of Q-View 4.5, a Quark XTension that allows XPress users to see thumbnails of all pages in an edition, including status and tracking of ads and editorial elements. Version 4.5 is 68k and PPC native, can read editorial element status from the Q-Edit Database and allows users to open a page by double-clicking the thumbnail. Teen MagNet delivers a daily 10-story package of teen-oriented international news and features to web sites and web publishers. Teen MagNet carries news from Reuters' global wires and includes stories written by Reuters' teen correspondents, ranging in age from 12 to 17. Recently, a group of six Denver-based Teen MagNet correspondents obtained press credentials to cover the G7 economic summit in Denver. The Software Construction Co. (Europe) Ltd. of Bristol, England, a joint partnership between Westpoint Peripherals Ltd. of Bristol, and the Software Construction Company of Atlanta, Ga., has introduced a production workflow system based on a picture and graphic management and archiving solution. The solution, based on Windows NT running with Microsoft SQL server, consists of media management software from SCC and CD jukebox technology from German manufacturer NSM, for which Westpoint Peripherals is the exclusive UK distributor. SII, a publishing systems supplier based in Sacramento, Calif., and Associated Information Systems International Inc., a software supplier and integrator based in Auburn, Calif., have announced they have packaged a front-end publishing system designed specifically for medium-sized newspapers based on SII's new Coyote/3 client for Windows 95 and NT. Zip2, a provider of local on-line products for newspapers and other local media companies based in Mountain View, Calif., has announced that it has acquired Pantheon Inc., the Seattle-based supplier of World-Wide Web publishing solutions for the newspaper industry. Zip2 will integrate Pantheon's product line, including its Builder, Interpreter and Community Suite software, into the Zip2 suite of products. The new company will be based at Zip2's Mountain View headquarters. Pantheon's management and staff will relocate to Zip2's offices later this summer. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
