CCI, which replaced an Atex legacy system, uses an Oracle relational database running on Sun Ultra Enterprise 3000 servers. CCI Europe may be visited on the Web at http://www.cci.dk. Cybergraphic, a publishing systems supplier based in Australia with U.S. offices in Burlington, Mass., has announced that Queensland Newspapers, publishers of the COURIER-MAIL (217k, morning) and the SUNDAY MAIL (581k), will be the first metropolitan newspaper site to install Cybergraphic Systems' new Windows NT pagination system. In February, Queensland Newspapers completed installation of full electronic pagination on Cybergraphic's Unix-based Layout System on a network of 323 PCs. CitySearch, a provider of community-based on-line information services located in Pasadena, Calif., has announced an agreement to create a local on-line service for residents and businesses in the greater Los Angeles area for the LOS ANGELES TIMES (1.1m, morning) and its corporate parent, Times Mirror. The new service, which will be rolled out in stages, will offer a guide to arts and entertainment, music, movies, restaurants, community activities and events, recreation, merchants and service providers. The service will cover Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Times Mirror is also making an equity investment in CitySearch. The agreement may be extended to other Times Mirror newspapers, including NEWSDAY, THE SUN of Baltimore, HARTFORD (Conn.) COURANT, MORNING CALL of Allentown, Pa., THE ADVOCATE of Stamford, Conn., and GREENWICH (Conn.) TIME. San Francisco-based Electric Classifieds Inc. has signed the TORONTO STAR (600k, morning) and the Community Newspaper Co. as clients for its on-line classifieds service. Community Newspaper Co. of Needham, Mass., publishes over 100 newspapers in Massachusetts with a combined circulation topping 1 million. Using ECI's engine, the papers can offer an on-line reader of their branded classifieds such things as a multimedia presentation about an item for sale and e-mail access to sellers. Extensis Corp., a software supplier based in Portland, Ore., has begun shipping Extensis Preflight Pro, an advanced preflight solution that identifies design errors before a job ties up output devices and slows production workflow. Preflighting is the process of checking electronic document files to locate and correct production problems before printing. Preflight Pro, developed in cooperation with R.R. Donnelley, a large commercial printer based in Chicago, enhances this process by checking single or multiple document files (including all information on fonts, colors and embedded images) for problems before printing. Used in conjunction with Quark XPress, Pro provides a Pilot feature that takes users directly to the problems, suggests solutions and enables users to apply corrections. Geac, a business systems supplier based in Tampa, Fla., has announced it has begun installing its VisionShift Attache and World Class Series Advertising software at Independent Newspapers Ltd. (INL) in South Africa. With Geac, INL -- an established user of Geac's circulation system -- will centralize national advertising, A/R billing and reporting for its 30 newspapers in three regions (Gauteng, Kwazulu Natal and Cape Town). The system will be implemented on an HP 9000/D360 host located in Johannesburg and connected to VisionShift Attache file servers at each of the sites. Geac also announced that the COLUMBUS (Ohio) DISPATCH (255k. morning) has signed a letter of intent to install VisionShift Advertising, Geac's client/server advertising software system, which was built for the Microsoft BackOffice product family and makes available to advertising reps and newspaper management up-to-the-minute rates, account information, credit detail, ad orders, contracts and insertion history. Lantana Research Corporation, an Adobe Ventures L.P. company based in Fremont, Calif., has announced that it has begun shipping Crackerjack 1.0, a plug-in to Adobe Acrobat Exchange 3.0. With Crackerjack, graphic artists gain control over their output of Portable Document Format (PDF) documents. Crackerjack output is compatible with any Adobe PostScript Level 2 or PostScript 3 raster image processor (RIP). The initial release runs on Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers and compatibles. Version 1.0 features support for metric units, a color bar, and printing of file name, page number, date and time on separations, The Macintosh/Power Macintosh version is available now for US$495 at Lantana's web site at http://www.lantanarips.com/. The Newspaper Association of America (NAA), a professional organization based in Vienna, Va., has said it applauds the U.S. Supreme Court for striking down the Communications Decency Act (CDA) as unconstitutional under the First Amendment. The decision, handed down June 26, gives electronic publishing the same protections under the First Amendment that traditional print media have enjoyed since the signing of the Constitution. Seattle-based Pantheon, a provider of electronic publishing solutions for the newspaper industry, has announced that Hollinger International Inc. has launched a web site for the content of its Chicago Newspaper Network properties, using Pantheon software solutions as their site management tools. The Chicago Newspaper Network includes the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, PIONEER PRESS, DAILY SOUTHTOWN and the Star Newspapers, which in combination publish 70 newspaper titles. The group is utilizing Pantheon's hub and spoke configuration, to bring all 70 papers on-line.
