COURANT (209k, morning): Classified pagination upgrade to Atex Gateway software/hardware. -- SANTA FE NEW MEXICAN (24k, morning): 10-seat AdVantage advertising system, Contact Manager. Atex is on the World-Wide Web at http://www.atex.com/. Houston-based Compaq, an $18 billion enterprise which ranks as the fifth-largest computer maker in the world, has announced plans to acquire Tandem Computers Inc. of Cupertino, Calif. The deal, valued at $3 billion, was announced during NEXPO '97, the annual trade show and conference sponsored by the Newspaper Association of America held June 21-24 in New Orleans. Tandem is a key supplier of a nonstop operating system used by newspaper industry suppliers, such as System Integrators Inc. of Sacramento, Calif., and the travel and financial industries. Compaq will issue about 29 million shares of common stock, which it will exchange at the ratio of .21 shares for each share of Tandem common stock. Tandem will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Compaq. Roel Pieper will continue as CEO of Tandem and will become a senior vice president of Compaq. Enrico Pesatori will continue as president and chief operating officer of Tandem. The deal is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 1997. Compaq manufactures Windows-based clients and Windows NT-based servers. Tandem is developing an NT server which will deliver its nonstop operating system to a broader range of buyers. Cybergraphic, a publishing systems supplier based in Australia, with U.S. offices in Burlington, Mass., has announced the sale of its Genera Advertising System to Copley Newspapers' Fox Valley Press of suburban Chicago. The system will feature 54 Cyber$ell ad sales workstations, two CyberCla$$Page classified pagination workstations and CyberARTS, the Cybergraphic Advertising Replicated Transaction Server, for SQL reporting. Fox Valley is consolidating ad sales operations of four Copley newspapers in a center in Aurora, Ill. Interfaces are planned to an EdgCapture credit card authorization system from Edgil Associates Inc. of Chelmsford, Mass., and a GEAC AIM billing system from Geac Publishing Systems of Tampa, Fla. The Cybergraphic system will replace a classified system made by System Integrators of Sacramento, Calif. Future Tense, a supplier of software for the World-Wide Web based in Acton, Mass., announced at NEXPO '97 that it had signed a letter of intent to buy Mission Critical Technologies of Concord, Mass. The value of the acquisition was not announced. Mission Critical, which was founded in 1992, makes remote ad management and fax delivery systems used by 30 newspapers worldwide. Two-year-old Future Tense has developed a web authoring program that separates content from design, allowing for dynamic updates of content. Future Tense is on the Web at http://futuretense.com/. Houston Chronicle Interactive, the on-line service of Hearst's HOUSTON CHRONICLE, has selected KOZ software to manage its on-line communications services, KOZ CEO Frank Daniels III announced during NEXPO '97 in New Orleans. KOZ, which is based in Greensboro, N.C., will install KOZ/Community, a browser- based information system that encourages interaction between organizations and members of the community. NAA, a professional organization based in Vienna, Va., has announced in concert with IFRA, the international newspaper research organization, the formation of the International Newspaper Color Quality Club. The announcement was made during NEXPO '97 in New Orleans. The new group will encourage consistent reproduction quality and will evaluate color printing through an international program. Newspapers whose reproduction quality meets the group's standards will be awarded membership. The club expands the IFRA Colour Quality Club, which was established a few years ago in Europe. NAA and IFRA hope to add participation by newspapers in North America and Asia. The first call for entries will go out in September 1997, with the first awards bestowed in October 1998 at the IFRA Congress and Expo in Lyon, France.
