The DAILY HAMPSHIRE GAZETTE of Northampton, Mass. (21k, evening), has announced it has selected Digital Equipment Corp. of Merrimack, N.H., to integrate a new pre-press system comprising the editorial and classified products of Advanced Publishing Technology of Burbank, Calif. The system will include 64 editorial and six classified terminals. Pagination will be provided for both products. The solution incorporates Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Word, Quark XPress, Windows NT and SQL server, running on dual DEC AlphaServers. Boston-based Digital Art Exchange, a provider of digital connectivity solutions to the graphic arts marketplace, has announced it will begin providing and supporting FTP (File Transfer Protocol) with all products in its Digital Workflow Suite. DAX FTP, a client/server software solution, will be included with the DAX Digital Transport product line. DAX FTP Server software is available for the Macintosh, SUN, Windows NT and SGI workstations. Digital Ink, the new media subsidiary of the Washington Post Co., has announced an agreement with CitySearch, a provider of community-based on-line information services based in Pasadena, Calif., to create a local on-line service for the Washington, D.C., area. The Washington Post Co. is also making a financial investment in CitySearch. The service, to be launched this fall, will be owned and administered by Digital Ink and will be a key service of http://www.washingtonpost.com/. Beaverton, Ore.-FaxBack, a supplier of software to the fax-on-demand market, has announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Instant Information Inc., a fax and e-mail development company founded in 1983 and based in Tualatin, Ore. I3 developed CAS 2.0 (Communications Application Specification) and several tools for fax and e-mail engines. I3 also developed the source code for such products as Symantec's WinFax Pro for Networks and Intel's Net SatisFAXtion fax servers. FaxBack may be visited on the Web at http://www.faxback.com/. 4-Sight, a telecommunications software supplier based in Woburn, Mass., has introduced iSDN Manager v.2 for Windows NT. This version of 4-Sight's key product supports a range of ISDN devices and enables file transfer rates from 1 to 10 megabytes per minute. iSDN Manager for Windows enables seamless file transmission from Macintosh to PC. iSDN Manager for Windows also includes accounting features which track all communication, allowing costs to be allocated to specific accounts. Mercury Center, the Internet publication of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, and Hot CoCo, the web service of the Contra Costa Newspapers in the San Francisco East Bay area, have introduced Just Go, an entertainment site whose content comes from several Bay Area newspapers. The site will include such things as movie reviews and times, restaurant critiques and menus, upcoming events, information on "kid-friendly" establishments, attractions near entertainment locations and coupons. Software to run Just Go is provided by Zip2 Corp. of Palo Alto, Calif., under a partnership with Knight-Ridder, the parent company of the MERCURY NEWS and Contra Costa Newspapers. Vienna, Va.-based NAA reports that it anticipates a strong showing at NEXPO 97, the organization's technical exposition and conference to be held June 21-24 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. More than 300 exhibitors will showcase products for the newspaper industry, from electronic publishing tools and sales force automation software to traditional operations technology. REPUBLICAN has changed the name of its new media division to the New Horizons Team, through which it will market its line of new media products for newspapers. Previously know as the New Horizons Group, the enterprise markets INFO-CONNECT audiotext systems, marketing support, specialty audio packages, Easy to Read Telephone Directories, and WebDelivery, a web publishing tool which will be launched at NEXPO '97 in New Orleans. New Horizons also announced it has developed a new audiotext platform for the Windows NT operating system. The new platform is based on point-and-click windows and has all the standard features of the INFO-CONNECT system. New Horizons may be visited on the Web at http://www.pottsville.com/. RUN, a software supplier based in Mahwah, N.J., has announced sharp cuts in the list prices of RunShare, its line of network acceleration products for the Macintosh. RunShare is used to move large files over standard Macintosh networks. The new promotional prices are designed to increase RUN's market share. Users now can equip a five-client and one-server network for as little as $999, $1,300 less than the previous starter-pack price. RunShare is available at RUN's web site, http://www.runshare.com/. The STAR TRIBUNE of Minneapolis has announced that it will launch startribune.com, a network of electronic services on the Web that will complement the company's electronic news and information service, Star Tribune Online. The first service will be FreeTime, a guide to entertainment and recreation in the Twin Cities area. Star Tribune Online will continue, as will WorkAvenue.com, an electronic resume service. All the services will be accessible at the company's primary web address, http://www.startribune.com/. Chicago-based TMS has announced it plans a major redesign this summer of WebPoint Interactive Content, which provides syndicated content for newspaper web sites. TMS will release a total of 10 WebPoint 2.0 modules between June and November of 1997. Version 2.0 will feature new columns and tips that are updated weekly and in some cases daily; more interactivity to enhance access to databases and layered information; redesigned screens that promote updated content; site maps to enhance navigation, and smaller graphics to speed page downloads.
