  • DESKNET INC.
    New York-based DeskNet Inc. has released QPImport and QPXport, connectivity technology designed to link document management, publishing systems and databases. QPImport and QPXport tie Quark Publishing System to Lotus Notes, Oracle databases, Adept and FileMaker Pro, as well as the Internet and intranets.

    QPImport and QPXport act to package database information and content into native and portable formats, allowing multiple business uses such as Internet distribution, print publishing, information analysis and long-term data storage. Supported formats include ASCII, Postscript, PDF and other native formats.

    QPImport and QPXport are platform-independent, providing an interface between PCs, Macs and mainframe systems. These XTensions integrate independent business systems and manage information between systems typically unable to communicate.

    Companies currently testing QPImport and QPXport include TIME, PEOPLE and SPORTS ILLUSTRATED magazines, May Department Stores, the EVANSVILLE (Ind.) COURIER and Publishers Clearing House.


  • EDITOR & PUBLISHER CO.
    New York-based Editor & Publisher Co. has announced that it will launch a print magazine focused on the cyberspace news and information industry.

    The new quarterly, scheduled for release in late June, will be called MEDIAINFO.COM, Journal of the Online News Industry. (E&P's 2-year-old site on the World-Wide Web, http://www.mediainfo.com/, is an independent publication producing original content with its own staff.)

    Unlike E&P, MEDIAINFO.COM will cover on-line news operations run by all categories of media companies. The full-color magazine will address cyberspace newsroom management issues, hardware and software developments, banner and classified advertising, graphics and design, databases, search engines, archives, journalistic ethics on the Internet, content syndication, digital photography, reporters' digital tools, audience demographics and other topics of relevance to on-line publishers and journalists.

    MEDIAINFO.COM will be distributed to subscribers to EDITOR & PUBLISHER magazine and readers at 3,000 on-line news organizations outside the newspaper industry.


  • EXSCITE
    Scores of former employees of the Israeli imaging device supplier Scitex have created an alumni group called ExScite, whose mission is to establish and maintain an up-to-date database accessible by members world-wide.

    Scitex is one of the largest contributors of professional talent to the pre-press industry -- about 8000 people have worked there since the '80s. These people are invited to stay in touch, or network on the job front, through http://www.rozin.com/exscite.


  • THE FREEDOM FORUM
    The Freedom Forum, a nonpartisan, international foundation dedicated to free press and speech, and based in Arlington, Va., has created the annual Nancy J. Woodhull Forum on Diversity and Media. The forum will honor the career and commitment of the Freedom Forum's former senior vice president for communications, who died of cancer April 1. She was 52.

    An outstanding journalist and a founding editor of USA TODAY, Woodhull was a strong advocate for fair treatment in the press of women's issues, and a leading figure in the U.S. women's movement.


  • GRAPHIC ENTERPRISES OF OHIO INC.
    North Canton, Ohio-based Graphic Enterprises reports that a customer site in Connecticut has enjoyed a significant increase in productivity after installing Graphic Enterprises' G.U.S.S., an OPI and output management solution.

    THE HOUR of Norwalk, Conn. (20k, evening), told Graphic Enterprises that productivity had risen 40 percent. The newspaper paginates on Macintoshes and runs G.U.S.S. on a Windows NT server.

  • KRT INTERACTIVE
    Chicago-based KRT Interactive, a division of Tribune Media Services, has announced that its web-ready packages and daily news animations (News In Motion) are available to sample and purchase on-line.

    KRT Interactive creates daily web packages Monday through Friday, containing breaking news and advance coverage of news, entertainment, sports and business events. An archive of nearly 100 packages also is available on Presslink Online.

    News in Motion produces daily breaking news and feature animations. Its archive consists of more than 1,500 animations, on such things as weather patterns, natural disasters, and health and medical issues.

  • LINOTYPE-HELL CO.
    Hauppauge, N.Y.-based Linotype-Hell has announced that LinoColor, its color management and scanning tool, is now available for Windows users. Since 1995, LinoColor core technology has been incorporated in ColorSync, Apple Computer's color management solution that functions at the operating system level in the Macintosh.

    All LinoColor desktop scanners, including the $1850 SAPHIR and $5495 SAPHIR Ultra, as well as the A3 size, $7250 OPAL, will ship in Windows-compatible versions beginning this quarter. (The $795 JADE was Windows-compatible when it was introduced last fall.)

    LinoColor scanners for Windows 95/NT will ship with LinoColor VisuaLab EZ software, including LinoColor-brand automated image capture, processing and color correction. They also will have 32-bit TWAIN "plug-in" functionality for Photoshop or CorelDraw, and the ability to manage color images according to ICC profiles for given output devices.

  • NEWSPAPER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
    The NAA, a trade group based in Vienna, Va., has announced these key events planned for its annual technology exhibition and conference June 21-24 in New Orleans:

    -- Early arrivals may attend two bonus sessions June 20, addressing telecommunications technology and how to produce a newspaper web site.

    -- For four days, attendees may visit 200,000 square feet of exhibits in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, where the inaugural New Media Pavilion will feature presentations by Apple Computer, IBM, Lexis-Nexis and others.

    -- On June 23, the MIT Media Lab will offer three presentations, exploring "The Electronic Paper: An Inkless Newspaper?", "BAZAAR: Your Personal Electronic Agent" and "Storyteller: A Perfectly Tailored Newspaper."
