Archetype, a software supplier based in Burlington, Mass., has announced that it has signed a letter of intent to merge with Bitstream Inc. of Cambridge, Mass., as a wholly owned subsidiary of Bitstream. The new enterprise would continue to operate under the Archetype name. The merger is planned for the end of the first quarter of 1997. Atex, a publishing systems supplier based in Bedford, Mass., has announced the sale of its Enterprise advertising front-end to the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL (142k, morning), a Donrey Media Group property. Now an Atex Release 3 customer, the REVIEW-JOURNAL has purchased a 93-seat Enterprise advertising system and two Release 5 Classified Pagination licenses. The Enterprise system will run on standard PCs and two IBM four-processor G30 SMP servers using a Sybase relational database. Installation will begin in March, replacing the existing J-11 (R3) system, with production anticipated in the fall. The WASHINGTON POST (800k, morning) has entered into an agreement with CCI Europe, a publishing systems supplier based in Aarhus, Denmark, with U.S. offices in Marietta, Ga., to purchase a CCI NewsDesk Pagination System. The system includes CCI LayoutChamp page design workstations running on Microsoft Windows NT; CCI DB Access software, which will allow editors to track pages and page components; CCI DB Access software, to integrate graphics and engraving services with support of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator on Apple Macintosh PowerMac, and servers based on an Oracle relational database running on IBM RS/6000 hardware. Production implementation is scheduled to begin in early 1998 and be confined to weekly sections. After the POST finishes installing eight Mitsubishi offset presses in late 1998, pagination of daily sections will begin. CCI Europe may be visited on the World-Wide Web at http://www.cci.dk. The Leader Newspaper Group of Australia has signed a contract with Cybergraphic, an Australia-based publishing systems supplier with U.S. offices in Burlington, Mass., for an editorial and advertising system with a total of 180 seats, replacing an Atex IAS and editorial system. Leader publishes 30 suburban Melbourne newspapers with a combined circulation of 1.2 million. The system, based on two 64-bit DEC 2100 AlphaServers with an FDDI backbone, will support 180 PCs running a mixture of UNIX and Microsoft Windows NT as client workstations. Leader's existing Hyphen OPI server will hold graphics files. Output will be to Autologic APS 3850 and 108 imagesetters. The 80-seat advertising system will be installed first. All classified ads will be paginated on CyberCla$$Page, Cybergraphic's Windows NT-based classified pagination software. The editorial system will run over a Wide Area Network (WAN) to three newsrooms. The northern office will run 27 reporter, seven copy editor and five pagination workstations; the southern office will have 15 reporter, four copy editor and five pagination workstations. Edgil, a software supplier based in Chelmsford, Mass., has introduced EdgCapture v2.4, the 32-bit version of Edgil's credit-checking software. EdgCapture sends, receives and logs all credit card transactions, and now processes check requests in the form of check drafts and direct debits. Wichita, Kan.-based FSI has announced that the ST. JOSEPH (Mo.) NEWS-PRESS (42k, morning) has purchased FSI's Freedom Series ADvance Sales for Windows 95 advertising input/pagination system. Installation, including 200 MHz Pentium Pro 686 ad system servers, will be completed by May 1. The St. Joseph daily ordered 10 Windows 95 ad booking workstations as well as FSI's ADvance Pro Set classified layout and pagination solution. The editorial side already has installed 18 Mentor Editorial Tracking System (METS) reporter workstations, replacing Dewar hardware and software; the newsroom now has a total of 28 FSI reporter workstations and 17 pagination workstations. The NEWS-PRESS installation is the first Oracle-based METS installation using Windows NT servers and Windows 95 client workstations. The paper uses Monotype's MGS3 OPI, RIP Express and ExpressMaster 6000 imagesetters tied to both Windows 95 and Macintosh client workstations. San Jose, Calif.-based Knight-Ridder New Media has launched Inkling (http://www.inkling.com/), a newsmagazine site on the World-Wide Web. The six-section interactive publication features writers such as Dave Barry, Carl Hiassen, Mitch Albom and Leonard Pitts. The site will publish stories, columns and user-generated features covering sports, pets, women's interests, weird stories and heroes. The site's six sections are: 6-PAK, featuring six top sports columnists every day; TALK TALK, a rotation of general interest columnists; CELEBRATE, a daily focus on the everyday things in life that touch us most; NO WAY!, a collection of the weird and off-the-wall, PROBE, investigative journalism; and PANORAMA, a daily news snapshot. Managing Editor, a publishing software supplier based in Jenkintown, Pa., has introduced Classified Layout System (CLS) 2.0. It features a rules-based pagination engine which evaluates user-defined rules and how they interact with one another, then places items accordingly. Other new features include dynamic header placement, with which CLS 2.0 analyzes break instances then uses predefined header guidelines to select the appropriate header; standard vertical justification controls with the addition of automatic filler selection and placement, and the ability to flow display ads and liners at one time.
