  • ADONE CLASSIFIED NETWORK
    New York-based AdOne Classified Network, a supplier of software and facilities for publishing classified ads on-line, has previewed AdOne Version 3.0, which features Knowledge Based Searching (KBS), AdOne's new proprietary search technology.

    KBS analyzes each classified ad's syntax, pulls out relevant data and processes it in a way so that users may tailor their searches using parameters helpful to their shopping trip but not necessarily found in classified ads.

    AdOne Version 3.0 features other enhancements, including classified search results ranked the same way classified categories appear in print; wild card and keyword searching; near-match search refinement; category-specific search pages for network affiliates, and Publishers' Resource, an on-line classified ad resource site.

    AdOne Version 3.0 is scheduled to be launched network-wide March 10.

  • APPLIED GRAPHICS TECHNOLOGIES INC.
    New York-based AGT, a provider of outsourced digital image management and pre-press services, has announced a multi-year contract with U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT of Washington, D.C., to provide digital advertising storage management and electronic transmission services.

    U.S. NEWS joins Time Inc. of New York as the first two customers of AGT's new Magazine Ad Management Division, which provides storage management of advertising content and electronic transmission services to magazine publishers, advertising agencies and printers.

    The new division uses AGT's Digital Link System as the digital advertising repository. Upon request, AGT will transmit or provide a remote printing site access to a digital ad for insertion in the publishers' magazines. From 16 locations across the country, AGT supplies a complete range of digital and traditional processes for images, including scanning, color enhancement, image editing, archiving and electronic distribution.


  • IPA SYSTEMS LTD.
    IPA Systems, a software developer and system integrator base in Cheltenham, England, has announced a contract with the broadsheet HEXHAM COURANT, which is based in the north of England to install IPA's Macintosh-based Q-Edit software to replace a Compugraphic One System.

    The installation comprises Q-Edit Editorial System including Q-Edit Remote reporter input, Q-Plan Advert planner linked to Q-Sales, Q-Track Advert make-up linked to Q-Sales, Q-View Page/Advert monitoring software and the Phrasea Archive System.

    IPA also has announced it has secured a $1.6 million order from EUROPEAN STARS & STRIPES, a daily publication for U.S. armed forces. The system comprises IPA's Windows 95 mETS Editorial System, the Phrasea Archive System, and Monotype MGS3 OPI and RIPs for computer-to-plate output. Installation will commence in March and go live in Germany during May, with start-ups shortly thereafter at sites in Italy and the UK.

  • LEXIS-NEXIS
    Dayton, Ohio-based Lexis-Nexis, a provider of on-line content, has announced that it now supplies access to Bloomberg News and the Bloomberg Daily Market Summaries. The service ultimately will include access to an archive dating to June 1992.

    New York-based Bloomberg News, which is used by more than 160 newspapers in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Asia, is available on a 12-hour delay. Bloomberg News provides coverage of the world's governments, corporations, industries and major financial markets. Its market coverage includes government, corporate and municipal bond markets, equity markets, key indices, commodities and currencies.

    The Bloomberg Daily Market Summaries will provide access to key market benchmarks from around the world, including: worldwide stock market indices, foreign exchange rates, government bond yields, and futures and options pricing.   • MACXPERTS INC.
    MacXperts, a software supplier based in Richmond, Va., has announced release of WebX, a WebSTAR plug-in that can link a MacOS-based web server to any Oracle7 database.

    WebX generates dynamic HTML pages from Oracle stored procedures. Stored procedures retrieve and manipulate data from the Oracle database, format the data into HTML and return the pages to WebSTAR via the WebX plug-in.

  • MICROSOFT INC.
    Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft has announced that it has signed an agreement with the VILLAGE VOICE of New York to swap technology for content. Under the agreement, the VILLAGE VOICE will provide event listings to New York Sidewalk, the on-line events listing service published by Microsoft, and Sidewalk will provide the VOICE with technology tools and resources needed to expand its listings operation.

    Sidewalk is scheduled to launch in Seattle in March, followed by New York and 10 to 15 cities worldwide by the end of 1997.


  • NANDO.NET
    Nando.net, an on-line content provider based in Raleigh, N.C., has announced the launch of News Watcher, a Java-based application that automatically provides users with updated news headlines and stories.

    News Watcher continuously monitors Nando's site for updates in global, stateside, business, political and sports news. Users are notified of new headlines or when a keyword selected by the user appears in a headline or story.

    Nando.net, a division of Sacramento-based McClatchy Newspapers Inc., also announced that McClatchy's SACRAMENTO BEE and NEWS & OBSERVER of Raleigh will use a local version of News Watcher on their web sites.

  • POINTCAST INC.
    PointCast, a provider of broadcast news via the Internet and corporate intranets based in Cupertino, Calif., has announced version 1.5 of the PointCast Network, which includes new channels from the SEATTLE TIMES and Contra Costa (Calif.) Newspapers, as well as Spanish-language programming on the MIAMI HERALD channel.

    The new version, which also contains expanded sports news from GOLFonline, will be rolled out automatically to PointCast Network viewers. Viewers can access the new version immediately by downloading the free PointCast Network software at http://www.pointcast.com/.

    Current channels on the PointCast Network include news, companies, industries, weather, health, sports and lifestyle, as well as access to CNN, CNNfn, BOSTON GLOBE, CHICAGO TRIBUNE, LOS ANGELES TIMES, MIAMI HERALD, NEW YORK TIMES, Philadelphia Online, San Jose Mercury News' Mercury Center, STAR TRIBUNE of Minneapolis, TAMPA TRIBUNE, Time Warner's Pathfinder, CMP's TechWeb and Wired.
