  • BASEVIEW PRODUCTS INC.
    Baseview, a publishing systems supplier based in Ann Arbor, Mich., and a subsidiary of Harris Publishing Systems Co. of Melbourne, Fla., has completed its installation of a 150-seat pagination system at the ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE in Little Rock (180k, morning). The Baseview system replaced an 11-year-old system from System Integrators Inc. of Sacramento.


  • CASCADE SYSTEMS INC.
    Cascade, a software provider based in Andover, Mass., has announced enhanced retrieval capabilities for its MediaSphere digital content management system. MediaSphere's proximity searching, which improves the ordering of search results by adding the clustering of matched words to the sort criteria, is based on the MUSCAT probabilistic search engine.

    MediaSphere can store and retrieve a range of digital objects, including text, images, graphics, HTML documents, PDF files, and video and audio files. Proximity searching will be included in version 1.3, which is due to ship early this year.

  • DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY INTERNATIONAL
    DT, a publishing systems supplier based in Orem, Utah, has announced it will feature its iterations of Windows NT and Windows 95 for pre-press applications at America East, the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association's annual technical conference scheduled for March 10-13 at Hershey, Pa.

    The first Windows products are for SQL database control and editorial input. Other DT demos will include the upgraded advertising system, including integration of classified and ROP booking, classified pagination using PlanBuilder, and a preview of DT's new Editorial Budgeting feature, including the ability to schedule graphics and photo assignments when selecting a budget.

    Infonautics, a provider of on-line reference services and information technology products based in Wayne, Pa., has announced the addition of TIME magazine and 10 other Time Inc. titles to its Electric Library on-line research service, http://www.elibrary.com.

    The new titles are TIME INTERNATIONAL, TIME FOR KIDS, FORTUNE, MONEY, LIFE, PEOPLE, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, IN STYLE, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED and SPORTS ILLUSTRATED FOR KIDS.

    New Horizons, a media solutions supplier based in Pottsville, Pa., has announced installation of the 100th Info-Connect voice information system, at PUBLICITAS in Luzern, Switzerland.

    The system is the sixth installation in Switzerland, including the APPENZELLER ZEITUNG (15k, morning), a German-language newspaper in Herisau. The Luzern operation of PUBLICITAS represents 31 newspapers in the area surrounding Lake Luzern. Founded in 1893, it plans to use Info-Connect for contests and editorial features.

    SoftAd, an advertising software supplier based in Mill Valley, Calif., has announced that the ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER of Santa Ana, Calif. (344k, morning), has acquired SoftAd's Media SalesExcelerator sales automation package. The Windows-based product gives sales people in the field access to a customer's ad history, media comparisons, custom presentations, ad rating and remote scheduling.


  • TRENDWATCH CREATIVE
    TrendWatch Creative, which produces reports on trends in the creative community from its headquarters in Harrisville, R.I., reports that a recent survey found that Macintosh and Power Macintosh workstations are the No. 1 planned purchase of design professionals.

    Desktop publishing software ranked second on buy lists -- a 32 percent increase from earlier TrendWatch reports --followed by royalty-free stock photography. A majority of respondents reported they needed help in "...identifying the right technology, building a business model and helping them to turn the technology into profits."

    The report also revealed a marketing opportunity for pre-press suppliers: 48 percent of the creative firms polled said they never get sales calls from pre-press suppliers; 42 percent reported never getting calls from computer and software vendors, fueling demand for outlets such as mail order.

  • TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES
    Chicago-based TMS reports that its WebPoint "Fitness Files" on-line content package has spurred on-line ad sales for two client newspapers, the NEWPORT NEWS (Va.) DAILY PRESS, http://www.dailyxpress.com/, and RACINE (Wis.) JOURNAL TIMES http://www.racinecounty.com/.

  • ZIP2
    Zip2, a provider of on-line consumer services for local media companies based in Palo Alto, Calif., has announced a partnership with New Century Network, a consortium of more than 75 on-line newspapers.

    Zip2 will be NCN's provider of on-line business directories, mapping and communications services. NCN will urge its affiliates to use Zip2, and will collaborate with Zip2 on a range of applications. NCN and Zip2 have created a special pricing structure that will be offered to NCN affiliates.
