  • ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Great Britain's Trade Ministry has awarded New York-based AP its technology award for the Electronic News Production System AP is developing for the British Broadcasting Corp. Windows-based ENPS combines text, audio and video on BBC newsroom terminals; eventually 100 BBC radio and TV locations world-wide will be linked via ENPS.

    Ian Lang, secretary of state for trade and industry, presented the award to the BBC's director general, John Birt, at a ceremony launching the government-sponsored program Year of Engineering Success.


  • CCI EUROPE
    CCI Europe, a publishing systems supplier based in Marietta, Ga., and Aarhus, Denmark, has announced that Indianapolis Newspapers Inc., a Central Newspapers Inc. property, will install the CCI NewsDesk System at the INDIANAPOLIS STAR (228K, morning) and INDIANAPOLIS NEWS (55K, evening).

    The STAR and NEWS will be paginated with CCI NewsDesk after installing 22 Microsoft Windows NT-based CCI LayoutChamp page design workstations, replacing 45 Atex terminals on the copy desk with CCI's editorial front-end workstation -- Microsoft Windows NT running Microsoft Word -- and putting in 20 CCI DB Access workstations (including page and component tracking) that support Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator on Apple Macintosh PowerMacs.

    The CCI NewsDesk servers will be integrated with existing systems at THE STAR and NEWS, including a legacy Atex system. The servers will be based on an Oracle relational database running on Sun Microsystems Enterprise servers.

    Other CCI Europe sites in North America include the CHICAGO TRIBUNE, ARIZONA REPUBLIC in Phoenix (another Central Newspapers property), SAN JOSE (Calif.) MERCURY NEWS, ORLANDO SENTINEL and FORT LAUDERDALE SUN-SENTINEL in Florida, and Canada's TORONTO STAR.

  • DIGITAL ART EXCHANGE
    Boston-based Digital Art Exchange (DAX), a provider of digital connectivity products and services for graphics communications, and 4-Sight, a high-speed connectivity software provider based in Woburn, Mass., have extended their agreement for DAX to distribute 4-Sight PRI iSDN Manager through September 1997.

    iSDN Manager, 4-Sight's flagship product, enables high-speed file transfer between remote sites using ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) telephone lines. File transfer rates range from 1 megabyte per minute over a single BRI 2-channel ISDN line, to 10 megabytes per minute with a PRI, 23-channel ISDN line.

  • HARLEQUIN INC.
    Harlequin, a publishing software provider based in Cambridge, Mass., has announced it will support the features available in PostScript Level 3 not already included in its ScriptWorks RIP Management System. Harlequin said it awaits release of Level 3 specifications by its developer, Adobe Systems Inc. of Mountain View, Calif.

    Harlequin did say ScriptWorks will feature support for symmetrical multi-processing, TIFF/IT-P1 input format processing, integrated color management and PostScript display list access and editing.

    In other Harlequin news, St. Paul, Minn.-based Printware Inc. has announced a strategic alliance with Xitron Inc. of Ann Arbor, Mich., giving Printware exclusive marketing rights to Xitron's implementation of the Harlequin ScriptWorks RIP for Printware platesetters.


  • NEWSPAPER ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA
    The NAA, now based in Vienna, Va., has announced that the BILLINGS (Mont.) GAZETTE (55k, morning) is one of three pilot papers selected for NAA Partners-2000, a project designed to improve ties between newspapers and advertisers. The GAZETTE will work with consultants and NAA over the next year to simplify processes, increase accuracy, improve ad quality, serve customers better and position the paper to increase its ad revenue.

    The other two papers are THE RECORD of Hackensack, N.J. (156k, morning) and the DALLAS MORNING NEWS (494k, morning).

    Specific goals of Partners-2000 are to reduce the complexity of newspaper rate structures, streamline business and production processes, and promote customer service in all newspaper departments.


  • NEWSPAPER TECHNOLOGIES INC.
    NTI, a newspaper circulation software provider based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, has announced the addition of telephony software to its NEWSLINE product line. With the added feature, NEWSLINE users will be able to manage all aspects of circulation needs, including taking complaints, entering stops and starts, and answering subscribers' questions about their account status.


  • TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES
    Chicago-based TMS has announced that its audiotext content provider, Voice News Network, has expanded its coverage of Canada's financial markets. Callers to audiotext services subscribing to VNN may get additional information about trading on the stock exchanges in Toronto, Montreal, Alberta and Vancouver.

    VNN provides hourly updates about activity in Toronto and Montreal, and daily reports about Alberta and Vancouver. VNN also provides Canadian news updates, results of the national Canadian 6-49 Lottery and Super 7, Canadian Football League scores and schedules, and weather forecasts for eight major cities.

  • VIRGINIA SYSTEMS INC.
    Midlothian, Va.-based Virginia Systems has introduced WebSonar, a new text retrieval product that allows users to publish information quickly and easily on either the Internet or an intranet without having to convert files into HTML.

    Based on Virginia Systems' Sonar Professional search engine and using an Internet browser, WebSonar can search over 12,000 pages per second, then display full content and page numbers of all found documents.

    WebSonar features Boolean, proximity, wild card, synonym and phonetic searching; relevancy ranking; highlighting of the search phrase in context; ability to step through search results one occurrence at a time or one document at a time, and support for non-HTML-based documents, such as Microsoft Word, Corel WordPerfect, Quark XPress and ASCII. (WebSonar converts documents to HTML on-the-fly at display time.)
