Amicus Systems, a pre-press systems developer based in London, England, has announced it recently supplied 26 Amicus Adept keyboards and software packages to the largest newspaper group in Sri Lanka, Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd. in Colombo The Adept keyboards are engraved with both the Sinhala and Latin alphabets. Keyboard layout is compatible with earlier systems at Associated Newspapers, so users can migrate easily to the new boards. The Adept software allows Sinhalese and English to be keyed directly into standard packages, enabling ANCL to use Quark XPress to produce its Sinhalese and English daily and weekly titles. Cascade, an archive solutions provider based in Andover, Mass., has announced that England's Associated Newspapers Ltd. has ordered 20 ORION RIPs in a deal worth $1.4 million. Associated Newspapers, based in Kensington, London, publishes the DAILY MAIL (1.7m, morning), EVENING STANDARD (478k) and MAIL ON SUNDAY (1.9 m). DSI, a circulation and advertising systems supplier based in Silver Spring, Md., has announced a recent sale to STARS AND STRIPES, the military services newspaper published by the U.S. Dept. of Defense. Data Sciences will install its Oracle7-based circulation and ad systems at the STARS AND STRIPES primary offices in Griesheim, Germany, and Tokyo, serving five remote locations and the global headquarters in Washington, D.C. Modules to be installed include general ledger, accounts payable, asset management and purchasing. They will be linked via the Internet and some leased lines. Digital Information Ltd., a Zurich, Switzerland-based company specializing in digital workflow processes in the printing industry, has introduced DI-Plot, a color proofing system designed for GTO-DI/Quickmaster-DI digital offset printing presses and the computer-to-plate system Pearlsetter. DI-Plot converts internal bitmap files stored for imaging and provides them in any CYMK-standard needed. Files that contain screen width and angles needed by an imagesetter are descreened by DI-Plot and processed so that they can be printed by a color printer or plotter. Proofs are made from RIPped files, assuring conformity between proof and print and eliminating the need to RIP a job twice. DI-Plot runs on the Windows 3.x, Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems. Any color printer or plotter with a Windows driver can be used. DI-Plot is priced at US$5000. Developed in partnership with British Telecom, the new catalog lists over 5000 companies using ISDN for high-speed file transfer. 4-Sight lists U.S. companies by category, including ad agencies, service bureaus, graphic designers, image database, printing, publishing, repro house and ISDN dealers. Also detailed are the 42 countries which offer ISDN, listing telco companies and their services, and telephone and fax numbers. Major players listed include BBDO, World Color Press, Alpha Graphics, Hearst Corp., Quad/Graphics, National Geographic, Ziff-Davis Publishing and USA TODAY. Being listed is free, as is one copy. LEXIS-NEXIS, an archive service based in Dayton, Ohio, has introduced News Quick-Check, which culls information from the LEXIS-NEXIS services' NEWS and TOPNWS libraries to provide daily news writers and editors with current news and background stories. The Windows-based interface opens into six categories of information: a morning briefing, and stories about a company, industry, person, topic or legislation. Dialog boxes allow a user to target information using a simple step-by-step search. The user may choose the type of source and dates to be scanned. UMI, a Bell & Howell company based in Ann Arbor, Mich., has introduced ProQuest Telecommunications, a customized electronic collections of published materials for the telecommunications industry available through UMI's on-line information system, ProQuest Direct. ProQuest Telecommunications provides information affecting the telecom market, such as competitive intelligence, market research, growing industry competition, new products and services, and changes in state and federal regulations. Unisys, a publishing systems supplier based in Blue Bell, Pa., has announced an agreement to install the Unisys Publishing Solution at the COLORADO SPRINGS (Colo.) GAZETTE TELEGRAPH (103k, morning). Unisys will replace a CSI editorial front-end and Harris pagination system. The GAZETTE TELEGRAPH, a Freedom Communications Inc. property, is the first U.S. daily to purchase the Unisys system, which has an established user base in Europe. The contract calls for 75 reporter and editor seats and 13 pagination seats with access to Hermes, the Unisys editorial and pagination system, and WireCenter, the Unisys wire service and document management system. The client/server architecture will use two Sun Enterprise Ultra servers and Intel-based client workstations running Windows NT.
