  • AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE
    AFP of Washington, D.C., has launched an on-line Summer Olympics service, providing current news about the upcoming Atlanta Games. The AFP Olympic Report, which is produced in Washington, provides a summary of late Olympic-related news, spotlights a particular topic and offers guides to this year's events and the history of the Games.

    The service is available at . Users may define their own selection of news to be sent to them by e-mail.

    The New York-based news cooperative has announced that three newspapers are beta testing the AP Archive, the news service's digital photo library that member papers may access remotely. Testing AP Archive are the BUFFALO (N.Y.) NEWS (302k all day), ST. PETERSBURG (Fla.) TIMES (357k morning) and THE DAY of New London, Conn. (41k morning).

    The archive contains more than 150,000 images. Using search tools from Personal Library Software, users can seek and retrieve images over a modem connection, ISDN line or AP PhotoStream link.

    The AP also announced the introduction of new software for the AP Preserver local digital archive. A member paper can use the EyeQ Publisher System, from DataTimes Corp. of Oklahoma City, on a single server or across multiple servers. It also can be run on an Intranet, or expanded to serve as an Internet-based archive on the World-Wide Web.


  • EVERYWARE DEVELOPMENT CORP.
    EveryWare Development Corp. of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, has starting shipping the latest version of Tango, an Intranet rapid application development tool to provide Web-database integration with FileMaker Pro 3.0 for Macintosh, the relational database from Claris Corp. With Tango, users can publish data from their FileMaker Pro 3.0 for Macintosh databases to a Web site without having to write a common gateway interface in C/C++, Perl or AppleScript.

  • HARRIS PUBLISHING SYSTEMS CORP.
    Harris, of Melbourne, Fla., has announced formation of Systems Engineering Services, a combined effort of the publishing and information systems divisions of the parent Harris Corp. The intent is to provide total life-cycle support, from product and process planning through implementation and support.

    Harris will use an Integrated Product Team approach to assist clients in such things as enterprise-wide solutions, business process re-engineering and legacy system interoperability.

  • MULTI-AD SERVICES INC.
    Multi-Ad Services of Peoria, Ill., has introduce Haciendo Propaganda, a package of headings and elements in Spanish to be used in preparing and selling newspaper ads. The product provides more than 600 items, in print or Macintosh format.

    More than 150 areas are addressed, including regional topics, heritage, people and ethnic food. Illustrations are provided as contones, woodcut-like images and line art. The headings assist in building ads for housewares, home improvement, electronics, furniture and other major consumer areas.

    Multi-Ad also has introduced the 1996 edition of Holiday Greetings, a package of elements for making up ads for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas and New Year's. Included are a song book, coloring book and Christmas recipes, as well as four-color tab covers and four-color spec ads.

    And Multi-Ad has released Creator 4.0, a PowerPC-native version of its display ad makeup package. Version 4.0 is as much as 85 percent faster than version 3.8 in exporting files, placing graphic masks and redrawing screens. Creator 4.0 also adds the ability to export documents as GIFs and TIFFs for inclusion in web pages.

    Suggested price for 4.0 is $995. Registered users of version 3.8 may purchase an upgrade for $140.

  • SYSDECO MEDIA GROUP
    Sysdeco, a newspaper systems supplier based in Bedford, Mass., has announced that Ottaway Newspapers of Campbell Hall, N.Y., has signed a letter of intent to purchase and install $15 million worth of Sysdeco products over a three-year period, ending in early 1999.

    Ottaway, a subsidiary of Dow Jones & Co., publishes 19 daily newspapers in 13 states with combined circulation of 576,000. Ottaway will acquire the Sysdeco Editorial Systems for newsrooms and the Enterprise advertising solution for 21 sites and about 850 users. Sysdeco will provide software, project management, installation and training.

  • TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES
    Chicago-based TMS has announced that it has joined with Mercury Mail Inc. of Denver to develop personalized media products combining TMS content with Mercury Mail's capabilities to deliver e-mail based on a subscriber's preferences.

    Under the agreement, TMS will be able to incorporate e-mail features in its Internet information services, WebPoint Interactive Content and TV Week Interactive, while Mercury Mail will be able to create new products based on TMS content.

    Mercury Mail's flagship product is Closing Bell, which offers subscribers personalized e-mail about stock quotes and news of companies chosen by the subscriber. Mercury Mail may build into its offerings such things as weather data, TV listings, horoscopes, travel information and special occasion reminders.

    Web Broadcasting Co. of Palo Alto, Calif., has introduced version 3 of WEB FM 2.0, a common gateway interface that links Claris Corp.'s FileMaker Pro 3.0 databases with Quarterdeck Corp.'s WebSTAR World-Wide Web server software for Mac OS.

    WEB FM was developed for FileMaker Pro. Version 3 features support for FileMaker Pro relational and portal fields; support for Infoseek-like "Next xx" records when performing a search; capability to mix "AND" and "OR" searches, and capability to capture all http parameters

    A trial version of WEB FM 2.0v3 is available for downloading at http://macweb.com/webfm/. Its list price is $195.
