  • ADVANCED TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS INC.
    ATS has announced from its headquarters in North Andover, Mass., the sale of a complete replacement editorial system to the NASHUA (N.H.) TELEGRAPH (30k morning).

    ATS's NewsDesk will replace a CSI front-end and Harris pagination system. Preserving a link to a Xitron OPI server, the TELEGRAPH NewsDesk configuration will include two Windows NT file servers running a Sybase database serving 44 PC workstations over an Ethernet network.

    Photogrid from Software Construction Co. of Atlanta will be used to handle graphics. The pagination engine will be ATS's QuikLayout program, with links to Quark XPress through the ATS QuarkDesk XTension.

  • ARCHETYPE INC.
    Waltham, Mass.-based Archetype has announced the release of MediaBank database software for Windows NT. MediaBank is a production process monitor, providing snapshots of work in progress and options for redirecting workflow. Compatible with Quark XPress, PageMaker, Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Freehand, MediaBank tracks and reports on such things as the size of each job and images within the job, time taken to spool and print a job, and which RIP and imagesetter processed a job.


  • CINCINNATI MICROWAVE INC.
    This maker of radar warning devices and cordless phones has announced that Erika Williams has been appointed president and chief executive officer effective June 10. Current President and Chief Executive Officer Jacques Robinson will remain on the board of directors and continue to lead the company's efforts to develop strategic partnerships.

    Williams has served as interim chief executive officer of System Integrators Inc., of Sacramento, since March 1996 and chief operating officer from July 1995. From 1978 to 1995, Williams held various positions with Amdahl Corp.

    Cincinnati Microwave designs, manufactures and markets ultrahigh frequency and microwave wireless communications products. The company's product lines include radar warning devices, digital spread spectrum cordless telephones and wireless data modems for use on the Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) network. The company markets its products both under the ESCORT brand name through direct advertising and as an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) supplier.     Oklahoma City-based DataTimes has introduced Business Analyst, an on-line financial information service that packages investment-oriented data about a company, such as company financial data and market updates, for quick access and review.

    Business Analyst is accessible through DataTimes' EyeQ business information network (monthly fee: $39). It compiles information drawn from Standard & Poor's, TRW Business Credit Summaries, Media General Financial Services, PC Quote and others.

  • DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY INTERNATIONAL
    Digital Technology International of Orem, Utah, has announced the acquisition of FaceSpan 2.0 from Software Designs Unlimited of Chapel Hill, N.C.

    FaceSpan, a tool for interface design and application building, permits Macintosh users to construct, save and run stand-alone applications and application prototypes with user-friendly graphical interfaces. DT uses FaceSpan in conjunction with its latest product release, Javelin, the database for desktop publishing, and the Digital Toolkit, which enables users to customize workflow and production environments by automating tasks.

    DT will release version 2.1 on July 1. The new version boasts printing capability and some internal debugging features. Upgrades will be priced at $99. FaceSpan is used now by more than 20,000 users to customize their work environments and create new applications, and to be the framework for AppleScript programming.

  • FREEDOM SYSTEM INTEGRATORS
    Freedom System Integrators of Wichita, Kan., and Data Sciences Inc. of Silver Spring, Md., have agreed to co-market their products, which have the Oracle7 database in common. The co-marketing arrangement will apply to the United States, Canada, and Central and South America.

    FSI sells front-end editorial, advertising and pagination systems, on both PC and Macintosh platforms. Data Sciences supplies business, circulation, database marketing/TMC and display advertising, accounts receivable and accounting systems. Initially, the two suppliers plan to make joint presentations to prospects while each maintains separate service and support units for their products.

    Both companies use the Oracle7 relational database and Windows95 in their product lines. At NEXPO '96 in Las Vegas, DSI will introduce a line of Oracle7-based newspaper business systems. FSI will introduce ADvance Sales for Windows95 and demonstrate its Mentor Editorial Tracking System (Mets), a PC-based editorial/pagination system based on a Windows NT server and Oracle.

    Also at NEXPO, Freedom System Integrators will be showing the Phrasea text and image archiving system from MV Parenthesis of Lille, France. Phrasea is a multimedia archiving and file distribution system whose archived files can be accessed by remote client workstations via modem or ISDN line. Over ISDN, a high-resolution file of 13 megabytes can be downloaded in no more than 3 minutes from anywhere in the world.

    The user interface was co-designed by editors from France-based Reuters, which is also the largest user of Phrasea solutions. The Phrasea server runs on the Macintosh, and the client software can run on a Macintosh as well as Windows 95.

  • MAXUM DEVELOPMENT CORP.
    Maxum Development Corp., developer of commercial World-Wide Web server tools for business and education, has introduced MaxumPack 1.0, a Macintosh-based applications set. Bundled together are current versions of Maxum's NetCloak, NetForms, PageSentry, WebLock and RushHour.

    NetCloak 2.0 extends the capabilities of a Macintosh-based web server by adding 45 commands for use in web pages. It executes these commands "on-the-fly" as pages are sent to the client. With it Web authors can customize their pages by client domain, time, date, browser, referrer, user name, password, access count, at random or by client-entered information.

    NetForms is the web server back-end that processes information entered by visitors to create interactive web sites. NetForms can take user submitted information and create a new HTML page, send an e-mail message, insert text into an existing page, and store the data for later processing.

    PageSentry 1.1 will monitor any page, on any server, anywhere on the Internet. Maxum's WebLock is a performance and security utility incorporating RAM-based file caching and security based on the MacOS built-in File Sharing and Users and Groups database.

    WebLock allows a user to simply click on the file folder he or she wants protected. RushHour is a software-based server graphics accelerator for the Macintosh which eliminates performance bottlenecks.

  • SOFTWARE CONSULTING SERVICES
    SCS of Nazareth, Pa., has announced the installation of its SCS/ClassPag classified pagination product at EL PAIS of Montevideo, Uruguay (60k daily). SCS reported that the newspaper now saves 64 worker-hours in producing its 25,000-ad Sunday classified section.
