  • ANYGRAAF OY
    United Magazines Ltd. of Finland has chosen the Doris32 asset management and publishing production system as its new editorial system. The installation includes Doris32 for asset management, workflow management and Internet publishing; Eddie for text editing; the Doris32 XTension for QuarkXPress for pagination, and the Planner edition and ad layout management system for book makeup.

    Reporters and editors will be working on Windows-based workstations with layout staff using Macintosh workstations. The complete installation will support about 250 staff members producing 33 magazines and is expected to be completed in Spring 2003.

  • THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
    The New York City-based news cooperative is offering annual site licenses for on-line access to the AP Stylebook, a guide to usage, spelling and punctuation and a reference book for terms and topics commonly encountered in news writing.

    This web-based Stylebook provides searchable instant access, with real-time updates, and allows editors to add their custom style material. Reporters or users can view the organization's information, along with their personal style entries and notes.

    AP members can be directly assessed and site license fees will vary for AP member newspapers according to weekly circulation and for others according to the number of individual users.   • ATEX MEDIA COMMAND
    Fairfax Regional and Community Newspapers (RCN), based in Sydney, Australia, has selected AMC's MultiMedia Command system as the group's new editorial content and pagination solution.

    The 200-seat system consolidates all the Fairfax RCN titles in New South Wales on to one server cluster in Sydney.

    Papers supported on the system include the NEWCASTLE HERALD (53k), the ILLAWARRA MERCURY (31k) and 12 other regional and suburban weeklies. The new system will also act as a disaster recovery center for the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD (266k) and the AUSTRALIAN FINANCIAL REVIEW (78k).

    Atex Media Command was created by last summer's merger of Atex Media Solutions and Media Command; this agreement involved Media Command and preceded the merger.

  • CALLAS SOFTWARE GMBH
    This Berlin-based software supplier has announced the release of a new version of pdfPreviewMaker, a plug-in for Adobe Acrobat that creates previews and thumbnails from PDF pages. This new version is now available for US$/EURO 249 per single user license.

    The new release of pdfPreviewMaker, which allows manual processing, creates previews and thumbnails of Portable Document Format (PDF) pages, either in BMP (Windows bitmap) or JPEG format. At the same time, pdfPreviewMaker can be driven by Callas' AutoPilot and can be integrated into an automated PDF workflow.

  • CCI EUROPE
    The SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE (512K) has announced that it has selected CCI NewsDesk as the paper's next editorial system.

    CCI NewsDesk is supports an open architecture that is both scalable and customizable. In developing the system, CCI Europe created new methods for image storing, workflow configuration and system configuration. The system also includes database management, data replication and backup technologies. Under the terms of the agreement, CCI Europe will provide the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE with several hundred concurrent seats.

  • CREO INC.
    THE CLARION-LEDGER (99k) of Jackson, Miss., a Gannett Co. Inc. newspaper, recently installed Creo's Trendsetter NEWS 100 platesetter for a 90-day evaluation.

    The paper said preliminary results showed the Anocoil 830T plate faster in on-press cleanup than the conventional plates it has been using. The paper said it was also tracking reductions in waste and time.

    Virginia's RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH (190k) has agreed to install Engage's ContentServer 7.0, the core platform for Engage's advertising production system; Approval Server 1.2, an Internet-based proofing and approval system, and Digital Ad Workflow, a browser-based add-on module that streamlines the processing of digitally delivered advertisements and artwork.

    The Engage advertising production system integrates with other pre-press publishing software and services, such as Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Distiller Server, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, AP AdSEND, Multi-Ad Creator and Quark XPress.

    New features and functionality of ContentServer 7.0 include out-of-the-box capabilities such as enterprise search-and-retrieval, and integration with third-party applications using technology including XML.

    The company also announced Engage for Newspapers, a product based on ContentServer that helps in the creation, approval, production and repurposing of advertising and other marketing promotions.

    Lastly, Engage said it had selected RealTimeImage's RealTimeProof imaging and proofing technology as an integration option within its advertising production and workflow systems.

  • INTERNATIONAL TYPEFACE CORP.
    Twenty-nine new fonts are now available as part of the newly revised ITC Conduit typeface family from ITC.

    In addition to ITC Conduit's six original weights (light, medium and bold, with italic counterparts), the family now includes extra light, regular, extra bold and black. Each new font includes italic and small cap counterparts, and seven sets of old-style figures have been added to complement the non-italic weights. ITC has also fine-tuned the spacing and other digital aspects of the original design.

  • OLIVE SOFTWARE INC.
    Forum Communications, Freedom Interactive Newspapers of Florida and Colorado, the Oklahoma Publishing Co, the Reading Eagle Co., WEHCO Communications Co., a hobby publisher and the University of Missouri have all agreed to use Olive's ActivePaper technology to publish current and archived editions on-line.

    ActivePaper is a platform providing archiving, advertising, multi-channel publishing, ad delivery, electronic tearsheet delivery and e-commerce. The Olive product line includes ActivePaper Daily, ActivePaper Archive, AdLauncher and ActiveTearsheets software applications.

    Forum Communications, publisher of THE FORUM (51k) of Fargo-Moorhead, N.D., will be launching all its daily properties with Olive. Freedom Interactive Newspapers of Florida is publishing four titles on-line with Olive technology; in addition, Freedom's GAZETTE (101k) of Colorado Springs, Colo., will also be using the technology.

    THE OKLAHOMAN (195k) of Oklahoma City has begun a 2.7 million-page microfilm digitization project with Olive. Reading Eagle Co., publishers of Pennsylvania's READING EAGLE, is publishing daily editions as well as Olive-digitized microfilm. The ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE (183k), the Little Rock-based flagship paper of WEHCO, is one of the eight WEHCO papers that will be using Olive systems.

    Two other publishers also will be using Olive technology. They are Amos Press Inc. of Sidney, Ohio, which publishes periodicals serving collectors of coins, stamps and cars, and the University of Missouri, which provides access to historic Missouri newspapers from the Civil War and Reconstruction eras.

    Maine's LEWISTON SUN JOURNAL (35k) has selected the SCOOP editorial system from SCS.

    The SUN JOURNAL plans to purchase all the SCOOP modules: NewsPlanner, PageTrack, SCOOPEdit, WebPublisher, WebEdit, SCOOP Ad and SQL Archive. It also will acquire third-party Fotoware modules for digital asset management and QuickWire modules for wire capture. The SUN JOURNAL said that it would initially use Quark XPress for page layout, but anticipates using Adobe InDesign in the future.

    At the SUN JOURNAL, the SCOOP system will run on dual Dell PowerEdge 2550 servers with a PowerVault 220S SCSI storage enclosure in a Windows 2000 clustered environment. It will support 40 seats with Windows-based workstations and a Macintosh G4 for web publishing.

    This Netherlands-based software development company has announced the newest version of its Smart Connection Pro, a workflow system based on Adobe InDesign and Adobe InCopy.

    This version integrates Version 2 of InCopy, which adds numerous enhancements, including an improved user interface, a new story view, dynamic spell-checking, features which are specific to writers, and native XML support. Smart Connection Pro v2 offers multiple story XML support and now uses a powerful check-in/check-out mechanism, allowing several people to work on the same page.
