  • AMERICAN PRESS INSTITUTE
    "Crisis Journalism: A Handbook for Media Response," is the title of a 76-page full-color book recently released by API, a non-profit organization that provides professional development and skills training to the news industry.

    The Reston, Va.-based API asked industry leaders to contribute their thoughts on how to produce and distribute crisis news. API then shared that information with newsrooms across North America and around the world through a series of e-mail alerts and its web site. The book was produced from the material collected.

    This Ann Arbor, Mich.-based provider of publishing software has announced CirculationPro Lite circulation management software.

    Scaled for smaller publications, CirculationPro Lite has three major components -- Subscription Lite, Pre-print Handler and Distribution Lite.

    Each module of CirculationPro Lite costs less than $1000 and is designed to work on one workstation only.

  • CANTO SOFTWARE INC.
    This San Francisco-based supplier of asset management software has released Cumulus QXP AssetStore module. The QXP AssetStore allows users to manage single pages of a Quark XPress file. It is an add-on option that extends the feature set of any version of the Cumulus 5 product line -- single user, workgroup or enterprise.

    Users catalog a Quark XPress file and Cumulus will create a thumbnail of the document and, in addition, one thumbnail for each page of the entire document. The XPress filter, provided with the QXP AssetStore Option, will also read out the text in an XPress document and place it in the Cumulus "notes" field. Users can then search the field to find specific text.

    The QXP AssetStore Option runs on Mac OS and is available for $399 per license. It is available at the company's on-line store and there is a fully working demo available there as well.

  • CCI EUROPE
    DE TELEGRAAF (751k) of Amsterdam, Netherlands, and the PASSAUER NEUE PRESSE (172k) of Passau, Germany, have recently agreed to purchase CCI AdDesk systems, while the EVENING STANDARD (450k) of London has implemented one.

    DE TELEGRAAF, the Netherlands largest daily newspaper, has agreed to replace its existing ad production system with a CCI AdDesk Production System.

    The system will provide DE TELEGRAAF with advertising workflow control -- including priority and deadline control -- as well as electronic planning of ad production and pagination of display and/or classified ad pages. It will also support control of ad colors, reserved positions and specific requests.

    PASSAUER NEUE PRESSE, part of Neue Presse Verlags GmbH, is purchasing a complete CCI AdDesk installation, including CCI AdDesk Sales and CCI AdDesk Production.

    The EVENING STANDARD, part of London's Associated Newspapers Ltd., has brought CCI AdDesk into operation as the first part of a three-phase installation process that will use CCI AdDesk for advertising sales and production for Associated's DAILY MAIL (2.3m) and MAIL ON SUNDAY (2.3m).

    This Vancouver, British Columbia-based graphic arts supplier has announced a variety of third-party alliances to provide consumables and add-on products to its line of imagesetters and platesetters.

    In the thermal plate arena, Spectratech International Inc. of Middleway, W.Va., and Western Litho Plate & Supply Co. (Western Lithotech) of St. Louis will be supplied. Both are qualified for Creo platesetters

    In the film and plate processor arena, Glunz & Jensen A/S of Denmark will provide systems. Creo will also continue to offer customers film processors from Carnfeldt America Inc. of Fort Atkinson, Wis.

    In the color proofing arena, DuPont Color Proofing of Wilmington, Del., will bundle its DuPont WaterProof thermal halftone proofing media with Creo's computer-to-plate systems.

  • DIAMONDSOFT INC.
    This Mill Valley, Calif.-based supplier of typographic technology has announced that it has licensed its Font Reserve for Mac OS X to Corel Corp., publishers of CorelDRAW 10 and Corel Graphics Suite 10, two applications which run on the Mac OS X.

    Corel will use Font Reserve in both OS X-based applications, allowing users to activate, preview, sort and copy the correct fonts while using the applications.

    The company also said that Bitstream Inc. of Cambridge, Mass., a developer of font technology and digital fonts, would resell the Font Reserve product line, including versions for the Classic Macintosh operating system as well as the Windows operating system.

    Bitstream, which holds a minority interest in DiamondSoft, said it would sell the Font Reserve products not only in its on-line store, but also through its network of worldwide resellers.

  • DENVER NEWSPAPER AGENCY
    The agency, which provides non-editorial business services to the DENVER POST and ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS under a joint operating agreement, has begun offering e-mails and on-line promotions of daily lunch specials at restaurants in the Denver area.

    The service is handled by OrdersUp.com of Denver. Users can go on-line to check on specials in their immediate area. Advertisers will be able to buy on-line insertions through the agency and OrdersUp.com will sell services to restaurants as well.

  • INTERNET PICTURES CORP.
    Recycler.com, a division of the LOS ANGELES TIMES (1m), is now using iPIX's Rimfire services to add photos and other rich media to classified advertising.

    Recycler.com currently features 100,000 new classified ads per week. Using Rimfire technology, businesses and consumers now have the option of instantly adding up to four photos with their classified ads on the site. Automated photo submission shortens the timeline for publishing ads and generates more revenue for the publisher.

    Rimfire is an open imaging platform that allows businesses to outsource the upload, processing, management and distribution of media such as photos and virtual tours from on-line customers and instantly publish such media to live web pages.

    Users can drag-and-drop photos from their hard drives into "Image Wells" within a classified advertisement upload page. From the image wells, the user can crop and rotate the photos as desired.

    Rimfire performs all photo file format conversions, compression and watermarking and instantly sends the photo data back to the publisherÕs web site to appear with the on-line ad.

    USATODAY.com will use the AdSuite system for managing advertising orders and placements handled by the sales, trafficking and finance departments. SolbrightÕs AdSuite will provide USATODAY.com with the ability to manage workflows through a point-and-click web interface that offers the appropriate access to information.
