  • ADOBE SYSTEMS INC.
    This San Jose-based supplier of graphic arts software has announced that it is now shipping Adobe Illustrator 10, its vector graphics creation application. The company said the latest release would run under Mac OS X, Mac OS 9 and Windows XP operating systems.

    New features include support for symbols; object-based slicing; dynamic, data-driven graphics, and improved response. The retail price of Illustrator 10 is $399, with an upgrade price of $149.

  • ADVANCED PUBLISHING TECHNOLOGY INC.
    This Burbank, Calif.-based newspaper systems supplier has announced that it has expanded its product offering with the addition of a full-featured circulation application developed by Lee Enterprises Inc. of Davenport, Iowa.

    As part of the agreement, Lee said it will provide the publishers of its 28 daily newspapers with the ability to install APT's integrated software for all newspaper functions, including editorial, advertising, accounts-receivable and management reporting, as well as circulation.

    APT said the addition of a circulation module to its system promises to provide centralized reporting by consolidating customer and sales information from classified and display advertising as well as from circulation.

  • AGFA-GEVAERT GROUP
    This Mortsel, Belgium-based supplier of graphic arts products has announced that it will restructure its European plate-manufacturing operations and would lay off about 400 people from its plant in Leeds, United Kingdom.

    The company also said it would be investing in a offset plate production facility in China that is scheduled to go into operation in mid-2003.

    Agfa cited the downturn in demand for analog printing plates in Europe -- coupled with a steady demand for the same products in China -- as the reason for opening the Chinese plant. It said it would concentrate analog printing plate making at its Wiesbaden, Germany, plant and that the Leeds plant would manufacture all substrate for its digital plate products.

    Agfa said it would implement the Leeds layoffs over the next 13 months.

  • DALIM SOFTWARE
    This Kehl, Germany-based software supplier is now shipping Version 4.5 of its LiTHO layout and TWiST workflow pre-press software applications. Version 4.5 adds new file formats, tools, filters and functionality to the applications.

    The company also announced a new pricing structure for LiTHO on Linux; the applications run on Sun, SGI or multiprocessor PC/Linux systems.

    This Mill Valley, Calif.-based supplier of graphic arts software has announced that it has released Font Reserve for Windows, a Windows version of its Macintosh font management software.

    Font Reserve handles large numbers of fonts, providing the ability to access, activate, view, sort and copy the correct fonts. Font Reserve is a font manager that organizes the computer's font resources and resolves day-to-day problems related to font management.

    Font Reserve for Windows is available directly from DiamondSoft and through resellers. The electronic downloadable version is $69.95, the CD version is $79.95. Multi-pack, site license and competitive upgrade pricing are available.

    Indiana's INDIANAPOLIS STAR (240k), Tennessee's NASHVILLE TENNESSEAN (224k) and Illinois' ROCKFORD REGISTER STAR (72k) have all chosen AdEX to provide their customers with the ability to place classified ads on-line at any time, day or night.

    The GDT-Nova AdEZ application provides real-time pricing, proofing and upselling. It was to have been operational at the TENNESSEAN and the REGISTER STAR late last year; the installation at the INDIANAPOLIS STAR was to be accomplished this month.

  • MONOTYPE SYSTEMS INC.
    This Rolling Meadows, Ill.-based supplier of pre-press output systems has announced that it is now offering the FasTRAK/HSV computer-to-plate system that uses a 30 milliwatt violet laser capable of imaging either silver halide or the new technology photopolymer plates up to 24.625-inches-by-36-inches.

    The Western Litho LV1 photopolymer plate has been certified for use with the FasTRAK/HSV. Other manufacturers' plates are in the certification process.

  • PIXEL GENIUS INC.
    This consortium of digital imaging experts has released MetaReader, a new Adobe Photoshop plug-in to read and export metadata, and said the plug-in is available for free download from its web site at

    The plug-in will display and export metadata -- or the information about a file, such as creator, creation time, creation location -- embedded within digital image files. In the near future, the company said, it would be offering a full-featured metadata editor that will enhance the basic functionality of the free MetaReader.

    Tribune Media Services, a division of Chicago's Tribune Co., is licensing technology and services from ScreamingMedia to power a new web-based information service.

    ScreamingMedia has provided FluentMedia, a content-licensing unit of Tribune Media Services, with its Syndication!Connect technology platform which includes its Content Engine and SiteWare. ScreamingMedia will use this distribution channel to make its technology and services available to all of FluentMedia's subscribers.

    ScreamingMedia's Content Engine will aggregate, parse, normalize and filter FluentMedia's content, then deliver and integrate it directly into the platforms of FluentMedia's subscribers. Those subscribers will install ScreamingMedia's client-side publishing software, SiteWare.

    ScreamingMedia's information-filtering platform will allow FluentMedia to create customer-specific information products. Using ScreamingMedia's filtering tools, FluentMedia will deliver to its clients' web sites only the content relevant to them.
