  • ADOBE SYSTEMS INC.
    The San Jose-based supplier of publishing software has released Adobe Illustrator 10, the latest upgrade to its vector graphics software application.

    New features in Illustrator 10 include:

    -- Support for symbols and object-based slicing; symbols allow for file specification manipulation and the repetition of artwork, while object-based slicing allows users to reduce production time by slicing objects, groups or layers and optimize performance by specifying raster and vector format applications.

    -- Support for dynamic data-driven graphics, which automate the creation of graphics and artwork variations, using scripts or dynamic image servers such as Adobe AlterCast.

    -- Support for Mac OS X. While Illustrator 10 is Adobe's first application to support the new Apple operating system, Adobe said that the rest of its major software applications would support OS X within six months.

    Illustrator 10 costs $400, with a $150 upgrade available for owners of previous versions of Illustrator and a $250 upgrade for owners of competing products.

  • APROPOS TOY & TOOL DEVELOPMENT
    This Toronto-based software supplier has recently released new versions of two of its Quark XPress XTensions, RoustaboutXT and XPress XML.

    RoustaboutXT 2.0, an XML import and export XTension, allows for the fine capture of XPress formatted text. Font changes to handle symbols, ligatures and ornaments are completely under user control, and anchored text and pictures are supported.

    XPress XML 2.0 brings the "bare necessities at a suitably modest price" to XML import and export. The company says XPress XML is "an XML reincarnation of the traditional XPress Tags filter."

    RoustaboutXT 2.0 for Macintosh or Windows sells on the company's web site for C$450 (US$300), while XPress XML sells for C$75 (US$50).

  • ATEX MEDIA SOLUTIONS
    Berlingske Officin of Copenhagen, Denmark, publishers of BERLINGSKE TIDENDE (135k), BT (135k, evening) and the weekly WEEKENDAVISEN (47k), has announced that it has selected the Atex Enterprise system for its advertising order entry and production needs.

    The deal is valued at more than $2 million.

    The 175-seat system will replace an aging Atex J-11 system and includes Enterprise classified and retail ad order entry, Atex Architect publication design and ad placement software, Atex Classified pagination and Atex Integrated Accounts Receivable applications. Also included is the Atex Online Advertising system that will permit both contract advertisers and the general public to create and submit their classified and display advertising through the BERLINGSKE TIDENDE web site.

    Atex said the system would be installed in stages and that the papers are now running a pilot program; the companies anticipate full installation to begin in spring 2002.

  • CALLAS SOFTWARE GMBH
    This Berlin-based software supplier has announced the release of a new Adobe Acrobat plug-in, MadeToPrint, and a new application, AutoPilot.

    MadeToPrint, the company's existing plug-in for Quark XPress, has been converted to run in Adobe Acrobat. The plug-in allows for the defining and saving of print job profiles, such as target printer and page set-up parameters.

    AutoPilot is an automation tool that creates an unlimited number of hot folders that allow AutoPilot-compliant Acrobat plug-ins to be started in sequence for file processing.

  • DIAMONDSOFT INC.
    Modulo Systems Corp., the Cambridge, Mass.-based supplier of publishing systems software, has recently agreed to become a global distributor of DiamondSoft's Font Reserve and Font Reserve Server products.

    Modulo is a global full-service distributor of Quark XPress and the exclusive developer and distributor of QPS, the editorial workflow and content management system.

    Font Reserve and Font Reserve Server are font management applications.

  • GRETAGMACBETH LLC
    This Swiss supplier of color systems and software with U.S. offices in New Windsor, N.Y., has announced three new products and new features to Eye-One System, a color management system for measuring and profiling monitors, including flat-panel displays and all input and output devices.

    The new products include iCColor, an automated spectral chart reader for accurate measurement of test charts, and ProfileMaker 4.0, which creates and edits ICC profiles, including multicolor for five, six or seven channels.

    Also new are ProfileMaker Bundles, which include the combinations of Eye-One with ProfileMaker 4.0, iCColor and Eye-One Monitor, and a bundle that includes ProfileMaker 4.0, with modules that measure monitors, spot colors and digital cameras and the iQueue 140 workflow software.

  • HARRIS PUBLISHING SYSTEMS CORP.
    Virginia's BRISTOL HERALD-COURIER (41k) has selected Harris' Newsjaz an a new editorial system and Harris' Jazstore for a new archiving system.

    The 25-seat system will include Newsjaz reporter/editor clients, Adobe InDesign for page layout and the web-based Jazbox Correspondent remote reporting tool.

    Harris will import the HERALD-COURIER's current text-only archive into the paper's new Jazstore archive, which will also support graphics, images and Portable Document Format (PDF) files.

    Another Media General property, Suncoast Newspapers, a division of Florida's TAMPA TRIBUNE which publishes seven products with a combined circulation of 130,000, has also selected Harris' Newsjaz as its new editorial system.

    The 14-seat system will use Newsjaz reporter/editor clients and Adobe InDesign for page layout.

  • MACTIVE INC.
    Knight Ridder, the San Jose-based newspaper company, has chosen Mactive's AdBase as the advertising system it intends to use at its properties in the future. The first installation will be at Fort Wayne Newspapers Inc. in Indiana, the agency that handles the non-editorial functions of Knight Ridder's FORT WAYNE NEWS-SENTINEL (46k, evening) and the locally owned JOURNAL GAZETTE (61k).

    Mactive said that it would establish a separate operating unit and staff to handle the Knight Ridder accounts.

    The company also announced that the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine (ACP-ASIM) has signed a contract for an Adbase system.

    The 13-seat system will be used for classified and retail order entry, classified pagination, ad layout and accounts receivable. The system will also feature fax-in/fax-out software and a credit card clearinghouse interface. The system will use Microsoft Windows 2000 clients and Microsoft Windows NT servers with a Microsoft SQL database.

    ACP-ASIM publishes journals, books, magazines and newsletters.

  • MEDIA COMMAND INC.
    Wilson and Horton Ltd., the New Zealand division of Independent News & Media plc of Ireland, has signed a contract to install Media Command's classified and retail advertising system throughout all its publications.

    More than 250 seats of SalesCommand will be implemented.

    The Wilson and Horton papers include Auckland City's NEW ZEALAND HERALD (250k), the CHRISTCHURCH STAR (121k), Hastings' HAWKE'S BAY TODAY (30k), Tauranga's BAY OF PLENTY TIMES (23k), Rotorua's DAILY POST (13k) and almost 40 other daily and weekly titles. The company recently announced that is also implementing a Media Command content management and editorial system throughout its publications.

    All sites will be connected via a wide area network through to centrally located servers in Wilson and Horton's headquarters in Auckland.

    This German supplier of graphic arts software has taken over the products and support of LSZ Software, also a German graphic arts software company. LSZ's development team will become OneVision employees.

    LSZ's main product is PS-Butler, a PostScript output automation tool that runs under UNIX or Microsoft Windows NT.

    Heidelberg and RealTimeImage have announced a distribution partnership, with Heidelberg now marketing an on-line proofing system based on RealTimeImage software called HDPROOF.

    The HDPROOF service can be integrated into all of Heidelberg's pre-press workflow offerings, including Delta Technology, Prinergy and the new MetaDimension. The service supports the Job Definition Format (JDF), Portable Document Format (PDF), Tagged Image Format Files (TIFF), PostScript and Encapsulated PostScript (EPS).

    The service will provide customers with a remote service that provides secure data transfer, shorter correction cycles and the ability to simultaneously view, mark-up and annotate print jobs on the screen, in full resolution.
