Based in Denver, this company has introduced the Media Portal XTensions module for Quark Digital Media System (Quark DMS). The Quark DMS Media Portal makes valuable documents easily available to anyone within and organization, and provides a Web site for content consumers to find, view and retrieve media files using popular web browsers. Upon installation with an existing Quark DMS system, the company immediately gains an intranet site that can be used to access files from the digital media system. Quark DMS Media Portal allows users browse for files by category or search across all media by name or file content. It also allows users to store files in, or access frequently in, a "media basket" that functions like an on-line shopping cart, and create additional media baskets that can be shared with other users. Additionally, Quark Inc. has announced the release of Quark CopyDesk Special Edition, a stand-alone text processing and editing application designed to meet the needs of professional writers and editors. Quark CopyDesk SE provides users with exact copy-fitting information and typographic control, but without the overhead of graphic features. The Special Edition integrates with Quark XPress, and articles created in SE can be imported to Quark XPress layouts, with exact hyphenation, justification and line endings. Text can be viewed in WYSIWYG, full screen or galley view. Quark is on the Web at http://www.quark.com/. This Boston, Mass.-based company has announced VideoFOCUS 1.2, a new version of its desktop product that enhances video frames by increasing resolution and sharpening the image, making traditional video a viable source of pictures for photo editors. Version 1.2 offers enhanced capabilities for sorting and searching video frames, including varying frame thumbnail sizes and printing capabilities. Image quality is enhanced with a redesigned masking tool that allows users to mask out areas of the frame that are not relevant to the final image. Speed is enhanced through the addition of an application toolbar for faster navigation, and a floating menu for faster image creation. Version 1.2 includes a Quick Export feature that allows the user to save out a single frame of video similar to a frame grab but at higher resolution. The Norwegian company WebPlan AS, which is controlled directly and indirectly by Orkla-Media, has reached an agreement on a merger with this Danish company, whose U.S. division is based in Rockville, Md. The merger will create a company with a powerful product range for the growing market for cross-media publishing and content management systems for corporate publishing. The new company will have its head office in Aalborg, Denmark, with subsidiaries in Norway and the United States. Following the merger, the new company will aim to offer newspaper and magazine publishers a tightly integrated system for both print and electronic publishing, which allows efficient parallel publishing of news. Virginia's WINCHESTER STAR (22k) has converted to a 50-inch web with the help of this Nazareth, Pa.-based software company. The newspaper, owned by Byrd Newspapers, opted to change paper sizes to save on newsprint. The web conversion affected multiple departments, including editorial, advertising, production and billing. Because the STAR uses nearly all of the Software Consulting Services' (SCS) systems, the system conversions were completely synchronized. To provide service to advertisers while preparing for new page sizes, AdMAX was set up to use new sizes for any ad orders scheduled after Jan. 1, 2001. Additionally, new rate conversion, page formats, lineage of classified ads and ad cost all required adjustment. Also, THE STAR-LEDGER of Newark, N.J., has signed a contract with SCS for an upgrade to its SCS/NPI newsprint inventory system. The upgrade includes the purchase of one Dell 2400 PowerEdge Pentium III server and five Laser Wand Bar Code Scanners. The SCS/NPI system tracks newsprint inventory and maintains a history of each roll of newspaper received. The newest version features GUI user interface, enhanced workflow for the entry of Used Rolls and increased data management for both new and used newsprint rolls. SCS is on the Web at http://www.newspapersystems.com/. --30-- COLE'S NEWSWIRE is compiled by Aimee Beck and distributed by The Cole Group, publishers of THE COLE PAPERS, COLE'S NOTES and NEWSINC., and consultants to newspapers and magazines worldwide.
