  • ADSTAR.COM INC.
    This Marina Del Rey, Calif.-based company has announced it has priced its secondary public offering of 2 million shares of common stock at $1.50 per share. Net proceeds to AdStar.com will be approximately $2.7 million, before offering expenses.

  • BITSTREAM INC.
    Based in Cambridge, Mass., this font technology company has announced the release of its first set of fonts from the New Font Collection (NFC) program. The new release features exclusive display fonts from Holly Goldsmith and a complete expert font set from John Downer.

    All fonts are available in TrueType and PostScript Type 1 formats for both Windows and Macintosh. The NFC offers benefits such as publishing typeface designs; the ability to build typefaces in OpenType, TrueType and PostScript formats; providing a variety of royalty options, and providing access to a network of worldwide resellers.

    In addition, Bitstream has released version 6.3 of the TrueDoc Imaging System (TDIS), which handles the processing of fonts in all popular industry-standard font formats and delivers code-size compression, and TrueDoc Manufacturing System (TDMS), which now has the ability to record bitmap data from the outlines of a source font and to render bitmaps. TDMS performance improvements include faster rendering of TrueType fonts, and the system now uses the glyph index of recorded characters rather than character code. With the new version of TDIS, customers may choose from a variety of industry-standard font processors as well as a series of Resident Font Sets.

  • CCI EUROPE
    This Aarhus, Denmark-based company which has U.S. offices in Kenesaw, Ga., has released the new version of its editorial system, CCI NewsDesk CustomLine, together with the new standardized system, CCI NewsDesk Baseline. Recent demonstrations focus on new media and showed some examples of workflow handling for multimedia publishing, such as how to trim content for new media, how to export content to new media and how to design pages for printed media.

    CCI also released its WebAccess system, a web-based reporter tool based on a newly developed applications programming interface (API) that makes it possible to browse in the CCI Database by means of an Internet browser and to obtain access to archive and e-mail tools.

    Lastly from CCI, AdDesk Sales and AdDesk Production have also been released. Example of ad workflow from ad booking to multimedia ad publishing was illustrated together with demonstrations of customer relation management functionality and advanced reporting and real-time statistics.

    The Blenheim, New Zealand-based daily, MARLBOROUGH EXPRESS (10k), owned by Independent Newspapers Ltd., has purchased an Insiight Editorial content and workflow management system.

    Net-linx Asia/Pacific Division's Insiight Editorial enables seamless integration of applications across a network and gives users access to content, assets and resources form a single desktop. Insiight, based on net-linx's Enterprise Application Integration architecture called UNA, will be integrated with the newspaper's existing QuickLayout advertisement dummying system, NZPA wire service and IMS digital asset manager, allowing users multiple access through a single workspace portal as required.

  • ONEVISION
    This software company based in Regensburg, Germany, has announced a system for editing and optimizing PDF (Portable Document Format) documents, Solico.

    The new system has been specially developed for users at the digital media preliminary stage; at newspaper and magazine publishers, job printers, business publishing houses and advertising agencies; at companies with their own in-house printing shops, as well as large companies. The system is also aimed at businesses that use closed PDF workflow systems and do not have the capability for editing data or making last-minute corrections.

  • SAXOTECH INC.
    CyberInk, a wholly owned subsidiary of Erie, Pa.'s Times Publishing Co., has selected SAXoTECH's Publicus Online Publishing System to power the new version of its web site. SAXoTECH, of Rockville, Md., will host GoErie.com and Publicus installation at the company's datacenter in Reston, Va.

    The Publicus system, expected to go live this fall, will be integrated with the newspaper's existing Agile editorial system and will replace CyberInk's homegrown system, which included the now-defunct Pantheon Interpreter and Builder products.

  • WOODWING SOFTWARE
    Headquartered in Zaandam, The Netherlands, this newly founded company has announced Smart XML Export. WoodWing's third plug-in for Adobe InDesign, Smart XML Export generates well-formed XML (eXtensible Markup Language) to reuse the contents of InDesign documents, both text and images, for other media such as the Web and on-line archives.

    The new system translates standard InDesign styles to XML tags automatically. After designing the page, users can select WoodWing XML from the standard InDesign Export dialog to export XML without any additional actions. When Smart XML Export is used together with WoodWing's Smart Layout plug-in, this structure information is automatically defined and exportable.

  • XITRON INC.
    Together with Hamillroad Software of Chicago, Ill., this Ann Arbor, Mich.-based company has announced a joint venture to offer Double-UP, a plate utilization optimizer that allows users of very-large format machines to buy one platesetter for both large and small presses.

    Printers can increase their productivity and reduce material costs, while avoiding a major capital expenditure, by simultaneously imaging two small plates on one large plate and then cutting the plate in half. Hamillroad's Replipate data management software manages the raster image processed files, then the Double-UP Module passes the information to XAPS (Xitron Automated Page Stitcher) where the flats are stitched together. This software combination is used in conjunction with a plate shear that cuts the larger plate into smaller plates for the smaller presses.

  • X-RITE INC.
    This Grandville, Mich.-based provider of technology systems that measure color and light has announced that it has acquired the assets of the HoloVision Products Group of Veridian-ERIM International.

    X-Rite is partnering with Virginia-based Veridian-ERIM International to develop new and advanced applications for this technology. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, but do include know-how and five patents in the field of tunable laser technology.

    Additionally, X-Rite has announced an agreement to invest in a new strategic venture capital fund, X-Rite Ventures LLC, which will invest in companies that develop and manage new technologies. XR Ventures will also assist X-Rite in the identification of new strategic technologies and partnerships.
