Belo's television group currently reaches 14 percent of U.S. television households, including four stations in the top 17 television markets, and its publishing division is headed by the DALLAS MORNING NEWS and Rhode Island's PROVIDENCE JOURNAL. Harlequin, a raster-image process (RIP) maker based in Waltham, Mass., announced that it has filed a lawsuit against San Mateo, Calif.-based Electronics for Imaging Inc. (EFI), a maker of RIPs for low-end color printing, claiming that EFI has violated the Lanham Act, a federal law which governs, among other things, false advertising. In its complaint, Harlequin says EFI knowingly made false allegations in telling Harlequin's original equipment manufacturer (OEM) customers that Harlequin's products infringe EFI's patents. The suit also claims EFI violated several Massachusetts state laws. According to Harlequin, the suit was triggered by EFI's recent letters to several of Harlequin's OEM customers threatening them with legal action if they continue to sell Harlequin products that EFI claims infringe on its patents. Harlequin filed suit on Jan. 3, in the United States District Court in Boston, and seeks to prevent EFI from disseminating further such claims as well as recovery of unspecified damages. Harlequin says EFI has been unable to find any legal support to prove its claims of patent infringement as alleged in its lawsuit filed on Nov. 6, 1998 in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, which said that three of Harlequin's products infringe patents owned by EFI. Harlequin is on the Web at http://www.harlequin.com/, while EFI is at http://www.efi.com/. Chicago-based TMS, a multimedia content provider and a unit of the Tribune Co. of Chicago, has announced that Knight Ridder/Tribune Information Services now offers KRT OnePages and KRT Interactive Web packages on a spot-sale basis through the company's Web site http://www.krtdirect.com/. Knight Ridder/Tribune Information Services is a partnership between Knight Ridder, the San Jose-based newspaper and new media company, and the Tribune. The new service allows KRTDirect users to browse, preview and immediately download content for use in their newspapers or on their Web sites. When a product is selected, a "preview" link shows users a description of the product and price. After reviewing the terms of use, users can click "accept" to start an immediate download or "decline" to stop the process. Spot-sale charges will appear on the client's monthly syndicate bill from TMS. KRT OnePages are full-color, paginated single pages and special sections including breaking news, features, sports and business as well as weekly features, and this year will offer monthly coverage of Campaign 2000 and a Summer Olympics Preview section. KRT Interactive Web packages use graphics, animation, photos, sound and interactivity on major breaking news, entertainment, sports and business events. Unisys, a publishing solutions supplier based in Blue Bell, Pa., has announced that LE MONDE, a 500,000-circulation national French newspaper, has selected the Unisys e-@ction Publishing Solutions to produce its daily paper and supplements. The system will allow LE MONDE to maximize editorial flexibility, accelerate the production cycle and better organize the increasing flow of digital information, according to Unisys. The Unisys solutions will replace the newspaper's current CCI pagination system as well its Systems Integrators Inc. editorial system, and will include multi-media archiving. The new system will be installed on 400 workstations and will be powered by two Sun E4500 servers secured by a Sun E3500 Disaster Recovery system. The editorial system will rely on an Oracle8 database engine with users accessing all applications from their individual PC workstations. Journalists will access the archives via Internet browser interface. LE MONDE officials said the decision to go with the Unisys system was based in part on a shared vision of the future that follows the market trend toward multiple media publishing.
