The Cole Papers

Seybold does Manhattan

Moving from its traditional Boston home, the spring Seybold Seminars will be April 22-25 in New York City.

Conference sessions highlight issues regarding publishing, media and technology. More than 50 sessions are planned across the three-day meeting.

In addition, there will be a number of full-day courses, including one sponsored by Microsoft ("Web Design Seminar: Strategy and Issues") and one sponsored by Macromedia ("Macromedia Day").

A three-day trade show will feature products from more than 280 suppliers.

Here are our favorite conference session descriptions:

  • Fast Track: Any Media Publishing. In a series of quick, visual presentations, six industry leaders talk about solutions and share their vision.

  • Subscription-Based Web Publishing: Getting Paid for Content. Subscriptions -- a proven model for commercial print publishing -- are turning out to be a viable model for making money on the 'Net as well. Today, on-line subscriptions are paving a profitable alternative to ad-supported sites. Speakers include Neil Budde of Wall Street Journal Interactive and Laura Fillmore of Open Book Systems

  • Authoring/Editorial Systems: Does Off-the-Shelf Software Cut It? Many publishers must now decide how to replace aging legacy editorial systems, while new requirements for creating for web-based publications are causing others to evaluate the technology. Can off-the-shelf software be an effective approach? Speakers include Michael Gold of CNI Corp., consultant Richard Patterson, and the editor and publisher of this journal.

  • News Media: Adapting to the New Media. After "ripping up the front page" and "replating to get in the news," how do modern news organizations react to on-line, audiotext and fax-on-demand? Speakers include Leah Gentry of Excite Inc., Sara Glines of New Jersey Online and Rich Jaroslovsky, The Wall Street Journal Interactive Edition.

  • Magazine Publishing: From Print to New Media. Not to be left out, magazines are rushing to the Web. But does the economic model work? The focus will be on what the challenges are, what works, what doesn't -- and what's in store for tomorrow.
