1312 goes Acrobat

The Associated Press, in cooperation with the Newspaper Association of America, has developed a computerized version of the "Wire Service Transmission Guidelines" -- popularly known as ANPA 1312 -- booklet in the Acrobat on-line format. (The ink-on-paper version has gone out of print.) You can download the file (ANPA89.PDF), from the Newsroom Computers section (Library 13) in CompuServe's Journalism Forum.

Big Al's big move: After a little more than a year as an industry consultant, Alden Edwards has been named senior vice president for sales and marketing at Information International Inc. of Los Angeles. A longtime supplier executive, Edwards was with Atex and Singer before joining System Integrators Inc. of Sacramento. In his 11 years with SII, Edwards started as veep of sales and marketing, became chief operating officer in the mid-'80s, led the management buyout of the publicly held company in 1989, rose to president and chief executive of the private company and took early retirement in July 1992. Edwards, who was Atex's veep of marketing, joins other Atex refugees at Triple-I, including President Charlie Ying and Senior Vice President Harry Dahl. Triple-I's longtime newspaper sales manager, Richard Ritterbush, will report to Edwards. ...

Big John's big move: Around World Headquarters here in San Francisco, we could always count on Correspondent John Bryan to wax eloquently on the wonders of the Midwest -- flat lands, fine people, no earthquakes. So it was not without a little surprise that we learned Bryan, a 14-year veteran of the Cincinnati Enquirer (where he was systems editor for a decade and a deskman before that), had been named an assistant systems editor at the Los Angeles Times. Bryan, who will remain with The Cole Papers, will be moving his family to the land of hills, weirdos and earthquakes later this winter. ...

New media madness: The changes, they just keep happening, including Knight-Ridder's move to name Bob Ingle, the executive editor of the San Jose Mercury News, to a new corporate post: vice president/new media. Ingle, who proposed and developed Mercury Center, the Mercury News' America Online system, had been editor of the paper for 13 years. He will remain in San Jose. ... Gannett Co. Inc. has established the Usa Today Information Network and has named Lorraine Cichowski as vice president and general manager. She had been the paper's deputy managing editor/Money. ... Media General Inc. has announced that its Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch will develop Gateway Virginia, a service on the Prodigy on-line system. Heading the effort will be Director Mike Steele, the paper's former deputy managing editor, and Associate Director David Chapin, formerly the paper's systems editor. ... At the Washington Post's Digital Ink subsidiary, Sara Fitzgerald leaves the organization to become director of member services at the Interactive Services Association of Silver Spring, Md. ... At the American Press Institute of Reston, Va., Ed Baron has been named director of new ventures and will head up the new ventures division; Baron had been API's deputy director for program planning and development. ...

Association assignations: And speaking of API, the organization's new communications manager is Lynn Soltis, a recent graduate of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. ... At the Newspaper Association of America in Reston, Va., longtime Presstime honcho James Donahue has taken early retirement. Donahue, who launched the magazine in 1979, was its first editor and had been publisher for the last four years in addition to carrying the title of senior vice president for publishing. ... In a reorganization of publications at NAA, Terry Poltrack has been named vice president and editorial director. Poltrack, who has been editor of Presstime since July 1992, will supervise not only the association's monthly magazine and its newsletters, but also a revamped Technews, which will switch to a magazine format and begin publishing bimonthly this month. Poltrack had been editor of the now-defunct Marketing & Media Decisions magazine and a contributing editor and writer for a large number of publications. ...

Real bits: At the San Jose Mercury News, Ed Holzinger has been named assistant systems editor. Holzinger had been an editor and systems editor at the Fayetteville (N.C.) Observer-Times. ... At the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Elana Winsberg has been named photo and graphics editor; she had been a photo editor at the Washington Post. ...

Vendor vagaries: At Monotype Systems Inc. of Rolling Meadows, Ill., Mike Bagdonas will be Northeastern newspaper sales representative; he'd been with Intergraph and Autologic. ... Also at Monotype, Danelle Canoles has joined the company in a sales and marketing support role; she'd been with Mycro-Tek. Tim Henry joins the company as a service engineer; he'd been with Autologic.
