Quick newspaper design coursesThe Society of Newspaper Design has announced both its spring Quick Course sessions as well as two advertising design workshops. The Reston, Va.-based organization is sponsoring three sessions in the east and three sessions in the west in April. Moderating the sessions and speaking on both tours is Neil Chase, the Arlington Heights, Ill.-based newspaper consultant who is the organization's chair of workshops. Longson has been a long-time Tribune Co. employee (Compton's is a Tribune division), working his way up from computer programmer to senior vice president for technology before moving over to Compton's last year. ... Also at Tribune, Michael Bales has been named associate managing editor for electronic publishing at the Orlando Sentinel. Bales, who'd been the paper's deputy managing editor for metropolitan news, will be responsible for on-line and interactive TV services. ... At the Press-Enterprise in Riverside, Calif., Mike Quinn has been named new media manager; he'd been editorial systems manager. ... And at Gannett, Jack Williams has been named vice president for business development in the Newspaper Division; he'd been senior vice president for marketing and president of the new businesses division at the Seattle Times. ... Feola, who is in charge of editorial systems at the Waterbury Republican-American in Connecticut, has contributed regularly to the newsletter for more than three years. At NewsInc., the magazine that metamorphosed into a newsletter, Jon Fine has resigned as editor to become a consultant with the Village Voice (he's working on a new weekly guide for New York City). Carl Mercurio, editorial director of the Simba Information newsletter, will edit it while a successor is found. ... The Bove & Rhodes Inside Report, a monthly newsletter on new media, has been sold and is now edited by San Francisco writer Tom Hargadon. Founders Tony Bove and Cheryl Rhodes, who started not only this newsletter but also Publish magazine, have decided to become new media makers (interactive CD-ROMs). ... Quality Control Scanner, the newsletter long published by Miles Southworth of the Rochester Institute of Technology, has been reborn as Ink on Paper, a monthly newsletter published by W.
